Compiled from carved stones, Skycore housings, and half-burned journals
No one alive remembers it. The surface records were lost when the ground became poison. What remains are fragments: carved stones on the older islands, glyphs etched into Skycore housings, half-burned journals in ruins too dangerous to reach.
The Shattering is the pivot point of everything. Before it: the Vulpari, their cities, their skies, their tools. After it: silence, floating stone, and the slow rebirth of life above the clouds. The exact cause is unknown. The oldest vendor on Crystalspire claims it was deliberate. No one has confirmed this.
"They built the islands. Then something went wrong."
A civilization of foxes who mastered the sky long before the world broke. They engineered the Skycores — thumb-sized crystalline engines capable of lifting stone into the clouds. They built the islands themselves. Their instruments recorded wind and memory in a format players still call Echo. Their trade economy ran on crystalline units still in circulation today, now called SkyCoins.
The Vulpari are extinct. Probably. Their artifacts are everywhere: crossbows, cores, ruins, and the creatures that may once have been their companions. Nobody knows how to make new Skycores. The ones still in circulation are all pre-Shattering. The sky world runs on borrowed time.
Nine-tailed weapons appear in Vulpari military records. The function of the ninth limb is redacted in every surviving copy. The gap is always the same length. Deliberate.
Recovered from a sealed vault beneath Crystalspire. The resonance pattern it produces matches recordings of the Shattering itself. Nobody fires it without wondering what it is listening for.
The last known instrument of Vulpari engineering to surface in the Drift. The inscription on the stock reads: return what was lost. No translation exists for the second line.
The Murk rose from the shattered ground and now fills everything below the cloud layer. It is not mist. It does not behave like weather. Creatures pulled from deep thermals sometimes show signs of Murk exposure: discoloration, strange growths, unusual behavior. These are the Hexed catches.
Nobody goes down. The Drift Authority enforces the cloud floor. Crossing it ends everything. The world above continues regardless.
Species showing Murk contamination markers. Worth more than they should be. The cleansing process is not documented in any surviving manual.
The world's existential downward limit. No mesh. No bottom. Just the Murk, and what the Murk hides.
Updrafts rising from near the Murk boundary. Creatures that ride them carry exposure markers. Worth more. Harder to explain.
Rumored Vulpari data vault. Location unknown. Referenced in the oldest Skycore engravings. Every endgame quest hooks toward it eventually.
Sky creatures evolved in isolation across the world's island clusters and open drifts over centuries. Those near the Murk boundary are the rarest and most dangerous. The open sky between islands hosts the largest pelagic creatures — massive sky whales, ancient leviathans, and prehistoric wanderers with nowhere else to go.
Nobody is certain why some creatures carry traces of Vulpari energy, the Prismatic and Auric variants. The oldest vendors on Crystalspire claim the creatures were made by the Vulpari. As companions. As sensors. As something else entirely.
The Sky Ancient One has no confirmed spawn conditions. It appears when it appears. The Drift Authority has logged seventeen sightings. All seventeen occurred alone. No witnesses reported seeing it arrive.
The Drift Authority's registry uses two parallel naming systems. The catch-feed names (Basic through Aetheric) are the ones players see. The flavor tier names — used internally by the species registry — are older, inherited from Vulpari meteorological language. Both systems describe the same ten-tier scale. The divergence is itself a piece of lore: the Vulpari named their world by its weather. The people after them named it by what they could get from it.
Six major landmasses float above the Murk, spread across the play volume from the cloud floor to the apex of Crystalspire. Each is a biome, a catch pool, and a fragment of the world before the Shattering. The open sky between them is Zone 0: the Drift. All islands are reachable. Two of them are not yet open.
The space between everything. Pelagic giants, migratory birds, wanderers with nowhere else to go. The biggest catches in the game live here. The Drift has no walls. It has no bottom. Patience is the only requirement.
Where everyone begins. Sky insects, common vermin, small fish. The welcome lanterns have been burning for longer than anyone remembers. The Drift Authority maintains a visible presence here and nowhere else quite as openly.
Colorful. Loud with bioluminescence at night. Exotic small mammals and glowing aquatic life crowd the catch pool. The shallows glow during storms in a way that suggests the light is coming from below, not above.
Dangerous. Exotic. Large land animals enter the catch pool at higher tiers. The canyon walls are scorched in a pattern that predates the current island population by at least three generations. Nobody has asked why, officially.
Apex predators. Giant marine creatures. Prehistoric crossovers. The oldest surviving Vulpari ruins are here, and the vendors who have been reading them for a very long time. The Sky Ancient One has been sighted here more than anywhere else.
Sealed since the Shattering, or close enough that the difference no longer matters. The Drift Authority has issued no statement. Access requires completing a quest the Authority has not yet named publicly.
The Leviathan — the only Aetheric creature in the registry — was last confirmed near this island. The Drift Authority's access notice is identical to Zone 5's. Word for word. Same document. Nobody has asked why.
Weather states are: Calm, Windy, Rain, Storm, Heavy Storm. Beyond those five, named sub-zone events shift the sky's behavior and the catch pool's composition. These are the ones the Drift Authority bothers to log by name.
SkyCoins are the primary currency — crystalline trade units from the Vulpari economy, still circulating centuries after the civilization that minted them ceased to exist. Nobody produces new ones. The supply is finite. This is why everything costs what it costs.
Echo is wind memory — recorded by Vulpari instruments that are still running. Players accumulate it with every catch and level on a cubic curve to 100. Whether the Vulpari intended a level cap is not recorded anywhere in the surviving texts.
Sky Pearls are something else. They appear at achievement milestones and in rare sky events. No Vulpari text names them directly. The older vendors handle them carefully and change the subject.
The Drift Authority is the post-Shattering institution that maintains the Fish Market, enforces the cloud floor, logs notable catches, and issues the sparse, ominous documents that pass for official record-keeping in the sky world. They do not explain themselves. They do not explain the Murk. They do not explain why Zones 5 and 6 require the same quest, issued in the same document, with no authorship attributed.
Their communications favor brevity. Proper nouns are used sparingly. What they omit is usually more interesting than what they include.
The Vortex Maw has been observed. This is expected. Do not descend past the cloud floor. The restriction is not new.
Sky Ancient One. Seventeen logged sightings. Conditions: none confirmed. Behavior: non-aggressive. Origin: pending.
Access restricted pending quest completion. Further information will be provided when further information is available.
Fox Per Second is the direct lore prequel: it depicts the final hours of the Vulpari civilization, the last day before the Shattering. SkyFish is set generations after — after the sky world stabilized, after the Drift became navigable, after the memory of what the Vulpari were has faded into vendor gossip and crossbow engravings.
Players who have seen both worlds are working the same lore from opposite ends. The Vulpari built everything in Fox Per Second. What they left behind is everything in SkyFish.
